Overview
OverviewThe purpose of this chapter is to introduce the engineer to the worldwide importance of energy systems, and to the historic evolution of these systems up to the present time. We discuss how energy use in various countries is linked to population and level of economic activity. Next, we consider current trends in total world energy use and energy use by different countries, and discuss how the pressure from growing energy demand and growing CO2 emissions poses a substantial challenge for the world in the coming years and decades.
