You're running through your weekly allotment for food earlier in the week than ever. You're probably right. But since you don't buy exactly the same items each week, how could you be sure? Then you hear on the 6 p.m. news that the CPI rose 3 percent over the past six months, so that the average family of four is spending more on necessities now than at any time in the past decade.
