Fatigue LoadingConsider a rod subjected to a time-dependent load, as shown in Fig. 2.45. The amplitude of the load at the maximum of the cycle is only sufficient to induce an elastic stress. That is, the cylinder is stressed at a value below the yield strength based on a standard tensile test, and thus it appears that the cylinder should not fail. However, due to stress concentration at discontinuities (such as surface notches or internal cracks), the local stress will exceed that required for yielding, and deformation and local fracture occurs (see Sec. 3.9 for details of mechanisms).
