FUNCTIONS OF DRIVE SYSTEMS The main motive power of robots is in the drives. Various transmitting elements are employed to drive the mechanical links to a desired position and orientation in the envelope of the robot-manipulator. At present, direct drives to the arms of robots are preferred though power is transmitted or applied to various joints of the robot through gears, belts, cable chains and many other means. There are four basic methods of drives:
