Atherosclerosis Atherosclerosis is a vascular pathology that has become a prominent disease in Western society. The term comes from the Greek words athero (gruel or paste) and sclerosis (hardness), and the disorder is characterized by progressive narrowing and occlusion of blood vessels. When fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium, and fibrin build up in the inner lining of an artery, this causes a narrowing of the lumen of the vessel and also an increase in the wall stiffness or a decrease in compliance of the vessel.
