Clearance Methods to Quantify Kidney FunctionThe concept of renal clearance is based on the Fick principle (see Section 8.4.2). Consider the continuity equation for the kidney with one input (the renal artery) and two outputs (renal vein and ureter). The quantity of some substance flowing into the kidney must be equal to the quantity of that substance leaving the kidney over time, as represented by the following equation:
