Preface
PrefaceBiomedical Engineering is multidisciplinary by definition. The days when medicine was left to the physicians, and engineering was left to the engineers, seem to have passed us by. In my early years at Rose-Hulman, I looked for, but never found, a book that combined the physiology of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems with the engineering of fluid mechanics and hematology to my satisfaction, so I agreed to write a monograph. Ken McCombs at McGraw-Hill was well-enough satisfied with that monograph and he asked me to write the textbook version that became the first edition. Steve Chapman was followed by a continually expanding list of other M-H editors, including Soda Taisuke, Robert Argentieri, Amanda Quinn, and now Wendy Fuller, who have each played an important role in making this second edition of …
