Construction and Main CharacteristicsThe assembly of a flywheel is shown in Fig. 4.1. The motor/generator is enclosed in the flywheel assembly, is directly connected to the flywheel shaft, and to reduce friction losses, the shaft rotates around a set of magnetic or superconductive bearings in a vacuum chamber, so that the system can maintain fast rotation regimes and high power-to-volume ratios. As flywheels are kept in a vacuum during operation, it is difficult to transfer heat out of the system, so a cooling system is usually integrated with the FESS device.
