10101031030700RespirationIn this chapter we further specify the requirements of the lung mechanics and uptake and distribution models. We introduce a conceptual model consisting of a muscle pressure generator and a model for basic lung mechanics. Lung mechanics are represented via a pneumatic component diagram. We also introduce a conceptual model for uptake and distribution, based on homogenous compartments. The latter takes the form of a multiple model with time-varying fluid volumes and flow rates generated by separate models driving the uptake and distribution model. Complete mathematical models for both subsystems are presented and are shown to have a state variable form.
