10113011011302The Respiratory SystemWe have already studied the process of respiration, whereby organisms oxidize metabolites in the presence of oxygen to capture the energy contained in the metabolites' bonds. Respiration produces not only energy but also the by-products, carbon dioxide and water. (Similarly, the processes of glycolysis and fermentation break down metabolites for energy and produce by-products.) Clearly, a means of gas exchange is necessary in order to provide the cells with oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. Rather confusingly, this process is also referred to as respiration. To disting…
